Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus – Pageant of Persia C. 1934

Vintage Persian Circus

This vintage Persian circus poster captures the exotic spectacle and theatrical imagination of America’s golden age of tent shows. The Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus emerged from the 1907 merger of two established traveling shows. Benjamin Wallace’s Great Wallace Show began in Peru, Indiana, in 1884. Meanwhile, Carl Hagenbeck’s Trained Animal Show introduced European traditions of reward-based exotic animal training.

By the early twentieth century, Hagenbeck-Wallace had become America’s second-largest circus. Its seasonal tours reached more than 100 American cities by an impressive rail operation. Nearly fifty cars transported performers, animals, equipment, and the enormous infrastructure required for each engagement. Consequently, the circus became a traveling city filled with performers, exotic animals, and spectacular attractions.

The Pageant of Persia design reflects the era’s fascination with distant lands, lavish costumes, and theatrical pageantry. Its imagery evokes an imagined Persian world designed to captivate audiences before the show even began. Furthermore, the vintage Persian circus aesthetic connects theatrical advertising with the era’s fascination with exotic spectacle.

Hagenbeck-Wallace wintered in Peru, Indiana, where its vast organization prepared for another demanding season. At its height, the circus featured hundreds of performers and approximately 500 animals. Elephants, big cats, camels, and other attractions helped create an unforgettable experience under enormous canvas tents.

However, the circus also endured devastating tragedies. The 1913 Wabash flood killed numerous animals, while the 1918 Hammond train wreck claimed 86 lives. Despite these losses, the show continued with assistance from rival circuses. Eventually, Ringling interests absorbed Hagenbeck-Wallace in 1929 before the circus folded in 1938.

Today, the vintage Persian circus design offers striking decorative appeal for collectors and circus enthusiasts. Its dramatic subject suits studies, entertainment rooms, libraries, galleries, and eclectic interiors. Moreover, the vintage Persian circus artwork preserves the romance and spectacle of historic American touring entertainment.

As a reproduction, this vintage Persian circus print brings extraordinary circus history into contemporary spaces. It celebrates pageantry, adventure, and the enduring visual language of classic circus advertising.
